BIRTH MOTHER TO US ALL (article first published : 2007-04-27)

Foregrounding the intimacy of her relationship with the country of South Africa, Jacquelyn Thunfors is exhibiting drawings created during her previous visits to South Africa at the Durban University of Technology’s Art Gallery. She has titled the travelling exhibition Birth Mother to us all.

Jacquelyn Thunfors has had many visits to South Africa and through her travels she has produced abstract drawings of things that capture her about the South African landscape and the people. The artist interrogates her relationship with land through these drawings as she uncovers and experience the diverse cultures of South Africa.

A Swedish-American artist, Jacquelyn Thunfors is interested in the scientific mitochondrial DNA discovery of the origins of human life and sees herself strongly connected to the African Continent. The drawings in this exhibition were produced in 2002.

The artist returns to South Africa to exhibit them at the DUT Art Gallery as a way of sharing her thoughts with another South African audience. “From my point of view these works are not drawings and paintings,” she says. “They are me `talking’ with you, as best I can, as a distant daughter, about the rainbow that is truly growing in each of you.”

Accompanying the exhibition is a catalogue detailing more about these artworks. The catalogue is titled is Birth Mother to Us All - South Africa.

Apart from her African travels, Jacquelyn Thurnfors has travelled extensively to European and Eastern Countries and through these tours she has uncovered a new dictionary word, which she claims as her trademark called “Journalart-transmission”. During this exhibition she will launch her new book Journalist Without Words-for you in which “Journalart-transmission” is explained further (see separate article in Literature).Jacquelyn Thurnfors has high qualifications in English literature, Communications and Journalism, Education and has a Doctorate in Mathematics and Philosophy. She has been creating art since the 70’s, producing work inspired by her travelling experiences. Among her many exhibitions are invited international and solo shows in places such as the United Nations in Mexico; Art Exp, New York USA; Metope Gallery, Acropolis, Athens, Greece and so forth.

She is also a founder of many international ongoing initiatives, including Journalart (Concept of international educational studies combined with skills of art as an entirely new academic discipline); M.I.L.K., Mitochondrial International Indelibly linked Kinswomen – New organization to Unite “clan mothers”, those women who have two daughters, the crucial link to mitochondrial DNA tracking to the origin of women species, amongst others. She specialises in sculpture and drawing, working with the abstract form. For more information visit www.thunforsinternational.com
