FROM HERE TO THERE (article first published : 2007-03-30)

The AVA gallery in partnership with Spier presents a group exhibition of contemporary art from KwaZulu Natal titled From Here to There.

Artists include Angela Buckland, Bronwen Vaughan-Evans, Carla da Cruz, Clive Sithole, Doung Anwar Jahangeer, Gabisile Nkosi, Langa Magwa, Lindsay Philips, Michael Croesser, Peter Ripon, Rike Sitas, Themba Shibase, Vaughn Sadie, Vulindlela Nyoni and Zama Dunywa.

From Here to There is an exhibition of recent works by artists living and working in KZN and provides a window on the exciting developments currently evidenced in the art scene of the province. Often marginalised, KZN output remains intriguing and vibrant. It consistently produces significant artists, many of whom have created careers outside of the province, and South Africa.

The exhibition brings together exciting young artists such as Michael Croesser, Doung Jahangeer, Gabisile Nkosi, Bronwen Vaughn-Evans and Clive Sithole, whilst also providing a first showing of the work of Vulindlela Nyoni, Lindsay Phillips amongst others in Cape Town.

The exhibition concerns itself with the contextual shifts that occur when representative exhibitions are mounted - bringing work from outside of Cape Town into its heart creates expectations from audiences and participants alike.

From Here to There also attempts to challenge some of these perceptions. Including works that subtly subvert the rich craft traditions of KZN (Clive Sithole), documentary video interventions which tracks creative endeavours for social change (Doung Anwar Jahangeer), printmaking utilised to narrate personal histories (Gabisile Nkosi) and mixed media drawings that explore the conflict between urban and rural identities (Themba Shibase) are some of the concerns dealt with in the exhibition.

From Here to There is curated by Nontobeko Ntombela and Storm Janse van Rensburg and runs at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town from March 26 to April 13.

Nontobeko Ntombela is the curator of the Durban University of Technology Art Gallery, and was previously with Amafa/Heritage KwaZulu-Natal as a Project Liaison Officer. Janse van Rensburg spent seven years in KZN as curator of the KZNSA before relocating to Cape Town in 2006 and taking up the post of curator at the Goodman Gallery.
