STREET LIFE (article first published : 2000-03-15)

Street Life is the title of a lithography exhibition by Franco-Italian artist Edoardo Di Muro which opens at 17h30 at the Alliance Française on March 17 to run until March 30. Stylistically detailed and keenly observed, his work recreates urban scenes, including townships in the Durban area, buildings old and new, and engaging characterisations of people in the street. Many will remember Edoardo Di Muro's first exhibition at the Alliance in 1998 when his works were received with much attention and interest.

Born in 1944 in Cueno, Italy, Di Muro grew up close to the Alps. He studied with fresco specialist Maestro Avanzi but has since travelled extensively throughout Africa and is known for reflecting African life in his drawings. He has received many commissions to illustrate the specific character of cities such as Abidjan, Lagos and Yaounde. Some of the countries he has visited and sketched are Angola, Bénin, Burkina, Faso, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

He has often collaborated with other well-known artists, illustrating a book cover for writer Francis Bebey and a C.D. cover for musician Manu Dibango of Cameroun. Exhibits outside of Africa include Paris (1992), Rennes (1995) and Houston Texas (1995).
