ANTON BENZON AT CROUSE (article first published : 2007-02-24)

The largest exhibition of paintings by respected South Coast landscape artist Anton Benzon is to be held at the Anton Benzon @ Crouse Art Gallery in Morningside.

This tranquil beautifully-lit gallery space in Morningside – a stone’s throw away from Windermere Centre - showcases excellent works of art by inspirational South African artists.

Benzon has been honoured by having the Morningside gallery named after him. Although a huge body of his work has been on show since the gallery opened last May, this will be his first solo exhibition here.

The work of Anton Benzon is denoted by distinctive emotive landscapes. He also captures studies of trees in the Eastern Cape an, particularly, KwaZulu-Natal. In his collection are paintings of the Drakensberg, Midlands, Umzimkulu, Bulwer, Nottingham Rd, Magaliesburg and Eshowe.

Anton works on canvas in oils using a palette knife. His paintings boast an extraordinary sense of light and surprising palette of colours in impressionist-inspired textured paintings. He is interested in the visual relationship and spatial dialogue between the sky above and trees and flora below. The skies in Anton’s work are particularly detailed and moody – sometimes bold and brash, other times tentative and delicate.

Born in Johannesburg in 1944, Anton Benzon is the son of acclaimed South African landscape artist, the late Johan Oldert. He worked as a lithographic printer in Zimbabwe in the early part of his career and lived for a while in Canada.

He is based in Ramsgate on the lower South Coast and works from his quaint sea-facing studio in a converted holiday cottage right on the beach. He works together with his partner, fellow landscape artist Diane Erasmus, whose exquisite landscapes are also exhibited in the gallery.

Crouse Artdealers specialises in original SA art. They offer art by some our country’s most sought after artists like Errol Boyley , Marie Vermeulen Breedt, Diane Erasmus, Bea, Este Mostert, Annette Poulton, Luther Marais, Claerhout, Cornelius Bosch, Andre De Beer, Robert Domijan, Christian Nice, Gabriel De Jongh, Lienkie Lombard, Johan Smit, Chris Tugwell, Portchie, Ina van Schalkwyk and many more.

It is owned by Michelle Dodds (who also runs the gallery) and Chris and Suzette Crouse who have been dealing in South African Art for the past 12 years.

The Anton Benzon @ Crouse Art Gallery is situated at 56 Adrain Road. The exhibition runs from March 16 to 26. More information on 031 312 2315 or visit www.artdealers.co.za
