DARKLANDS (article first published : 2000-03-13)

The BAT Centre’s Democratic Gallery will host an exhibition of pen and ink drawings by Lara Jay Phillips from March 13 to April 7.

“With my work I hope to thrust a bit of darkness into the eyes of the people,” says Lara Jay Phillips who believes that to live is “to be tarnished, every experience leaves behind the faintest vibration of its presence even after itself is gone.”

She adds: “Life is, in many ways, simply a motion flowing towards the climax of death. I don’t know whether death is beauty or ugliness but I know that it is final. It is final and it is unknown. But then, so is life. We think we understand life, all of its hues and colours when in fact protected by our faith or ignorance we chose to wander only in places that burn with the brightest light.”

The exhibition is titled Darklands – A mirror image of our world and is an attempt by the artist to “reveal the cavities and rotting holes behind the light.” A self-taught artist, Lara Jay Phillips was offered a place at Technikon Natal but declined as she felt the direction in which she wanted to take her art would be “obscured by formal education”. She taught herself by means of observation and books.
