START. THE NIVEA ART AWARD (article first published : 2007-02-5)

Entries are again open for START. The Nivea Art Award for the third consecutive year, offering an opportunity for talented KZN artists to ‘paint’ their way to a career in the visual arts.

The competition is open to promising artists from all over KZN who specialise in two-dimensional work (all mediums) who are over 18, have not held solo exhibitions or won any major art competitions.

A prestigious panel of judges will be tasked with selecting 25 finalists from entries received. These finalists will be commissioned by NIVEA to create a unique two-dimensional artwork within a three-month time frame, which must be themed ‘moments of interaction between people’ and should ‘mirror one or more of NIVEA’s core values: care, reliability, understanding, humanity, love and harmony.’

These works will be exhibited at an awards ceremony on July 10 at the KZNSA. The three selected winners will win substantial cash prizes – first prize is R20,000, second R10,000 and third R5,000. The final works will be catalogued, in a stylish booklet.

The exhibition will run at the KZNSA from July 11 to 29 to allow the public the chance to view or purchase the works. Finalists of START may also receive the further opportunity to be selected by KZNSA to exhibit in the NIVEA Gallery the following year.

To enter, artists are required to submit a completed entry form, along with photographs of three to four of their existing artworks and a short artist’s statement. Entries close on February 16, 2007.

The competition is an initiative by the NIVEA brand under Beiersdorf South Africa, with expert guidance from judges Storm Janse van Rensburg, Julia Meintjes, Gabi Nkosi, Anthea Martin, S’fiso ka Mkame and Nathi Gumede.

Entry forms for START. THE NIVEA ART AWARD 2007 are available from KZNSA Gallery, African Art Centre, BAT Centre, Art Spectrum in Durban, Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg and Indonsa Arts and Crafts Centre in Ulundi.
