NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Sasol, the world's largest producer of wax, has announced the launch of the Sasol Wax Art Award 2007. This award is aimed at established, professional artists resident in South Africa and seeks to reward innovation and excellence in the visual arts. Artists will be judged through a peer review process on submissions of their curriculum vitae, and career profile. Semi finalists will then be invited to submit proposals for artworks using wax as a key component in the works, either in process, medium or conceptually. Five finalists will then be selected. In order to be eligible, you need to be a practicing career artist, permanently resident in the Republic of South Africa with a sustained career profile spanning at least the last seven to ten years. Five finalists each receive an honorarium of R20,000 towards production of works. The winner will receive R130,000. The following criteria will be considered: quality of artists work, and visible growth over their career; academic and/or community profile and/or exhibitions history; participation in residencies and programmes locally and/or internationally; publications; qualifications formal, informal and/or community based; affiliation to industry organisations and bodies, and outreach and industry participation. The entry deadline is at close of business on February 26. Entry boxes have been located in 11 venues around South Africa and all relevant information is contained on the entry forms which are available from Durban Arts at 316 Avondale Road, Troubadour Productions at 292 Jan Smuts Highway or D’ARTS offices (phone 031 261 6036). The Kwa Zulu-Natal collection box for entries is ArtSpace at 3 Millar Road (off Umgeni Road). Phone Karen Bradtke on 031 312 0793.
