POST MORTEM 2010 (article first published : 2007-01-28)

Post Mortem 2010 is a short film by renowned Cape Town based photographer Dale Yudelman which is to be presented in the KZNSA Gallery’s Multimedia Room.

During a morning talk show on a leading national radio station SAFM - three South Africans - Fanie, Robert and Angela call in to voice their opinion on the news of South Africa winning the Soccer World Cup 2010 bid.

What emerges is an unself-conscious social portrait as conversations illuminate some of the misgivings, old fears and hidden agendas that lurk within. Yet in spite of prejudice – an innocent and bold optimism reveals itself in the passionate way South Africans participate and relate to matters of national pride.

Dale Yudelman’s career in photography has led him through two eras of South African history as well as across several continents. Born in Johannesburg, he began photographing at a young age under the tutelage of his father and was barely out of his teens in 1979 when he landed a job as staff photographer at South Africa’s largest daily newspaper The Star.

In 1986 Dale Yudelman left South Africa, working as a freelance photographer first in London and later in Los Angeles. He returned to the newly democratic South Africa in1996 and currently lives in Cape Town. His work can be found in major corporate and private art collections worldwide.

For the past five years he worked collaboratively with painter Arlene Amaler-Raviv, creating multi-media images addressing a wide range of social issues - their most recent collaboration Livestock was exhibited at the 8th Havana Biennial, Cuba and Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo, Norway.

Dale Yudelman is also presenting an accompanying exhibition in the KZNSA’s Main Gallery titled Reality Bytes (see separate article). Both exhibitions run from February 13 to March 4. More information from gallery curator Nathi Gumede on 082 220 0368.
