KOBUS KOTZÉ (article first published : 2006-10-18)

An exhibition of evocative, brilliantly-executed landscapes by Free State artist Kobus Kotzé opens at the elegant Anton Benzon @ Crouse Art Gallery KZN on October 20.

This elegant and airy gallery space in Morningside aims to showcase excellent works of art by inspirational South African artists. This will be their third exhibition complementing the work of an eclectic group of fine artists also on display.

Kobus Kotzé studied agriculture and his passionate love for capturing landscapes is very much the essence of his inspiration. He is sensitive to the relationship between man and nature. On his farm in the Eastern-Cape, he recorded a barrage of ideas during the day, and spent the evenings in his studio expressing them on canvas. He held his first solo exhibition in 1971 and many other exhibitions followed. In 1990 Kobus opened the Kobus Kotzé Art Gallery in Aliwal North, and become a full-time artist.

Kobus has been painting since 1967 and has developed a unique sense of mixing and using colours. One of the exceptional qualities in his work is his ability to make the sky look exiting, real and radiant. He uses his camera to capture landscapes, trees and cities and in his studio he combines the photographs with his emotions and traditions.

Kobus will be joined in Durban by his wife Jo and daughter Hannelie – both accomplished painters. Hannelie favours the symbolism and poetry blend and has always been fascinated by the interpretation of what could be called “word art”. She believes that painting and poetry are a reflection of her creativity and the marriage of the two is natural.

Crouse Art Dealers specialises in original SA art and offers the work of artists like Anton Benzon, Diane Erasmus, Errol Boyley, Frans Claerhout, Portchie, Christiaan Nice, Bea, Annette Poulton, Luther Marais, Cornelius Bosch, Andre De Beer, Robert Domijan, Gabriel De Jongh, Lienkie Lombard, Johan Smit, Chris Tugwell, Ina van Schalkwyk, Munro and many more.

The Anton Benzon @ Crouse Art Gallery is situated a stone’s throw away from Windermere Centre, 56 Adrain Road in Morningside alongside Sutton Park. It is owned by Michelle Dodds (who also runs the gallery) and Chris and Suzette Crouse who have been dealing in South African Art for the past 12 years.

The Kobus Kotzé exhibition runs from October 20 to 28. More information on 031 312 2315 or visit www.artdealers.co.za
