CRITICAL VOICES (article first published : 2006-09-23)

The KZNSA Gallery has announced a call for participants in an arts writing and editing workshop by Sean O Toole.

Hosted by the KZNSA gallery and run as part of the KZNSA Young Artists Project, Critical Voices is an ongoing initiative to support new and experimental work. This programme is funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

The KZNSA Gallery invites expressions of interest to participate in a comprehensive critical writing workshop during November with one of South Africa’s prominent voices in the visual arts, Sean O Toole.

A Johannesburg-based journalist and writer, Sean O Toole is currently editor of the quarterly print magazine, Art South Africa, and writes a weekly column on photography for the Sunday Times, South Africa’s largest circulation newspaper. His journalism has been widely published, including Adbusters, Art in America, Blueprint, BBC Focus on Africa, Business Day, Colors, Creative Review, Eye, ID(USA), Kyoto Journal, amongst others. The recipient of the 2006 HSBC/SA PEN Literary Award, judged by Nobel laureate JM Coetzee, he recently published his debut book, a collection of short stories titled The Marquis of Mooikloof produced by Double Storey.

In keeping with the aims of growing contemporary art discourse, the Young Artists Project will expand its initiatives to include an annual critical writing workshop for the next three years, generously funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy. The workshop will systematically and professionally empower new voices with the skills for analytical and critical reflection on contemporary art, through writing.

The workshop will be hosted over a total of seven sessions (one session per day). Interested individuals are invited to send in an example of their writing (at least 500 words) as well as a brief CV. The workshop is free of charge to participants, and successful candidates will be asked to sign a form of commitment to complete the course.

Workshops dates are November 4, 10 and 11, 17 and 18 followed by November 25 and 26.

The workshop is open to anyone with a postgraduate qualification, preferably with a major in visual arts, journalism or general arts degree/diploma, and with a proven interest in contemporary arts practice. This includes artists, writers, curators, arts administrators and/or those active in the visual arts world.

All submissions to be in hardcopy as well as on disk/CD and a letter of motivation for participation and stated availability for duration of the course. The submission should include a short CV and a 500 word example of recent writing on a subject of own choice.

Documentation must be delivered or emailed to reach the NSA Gallery no later than October 20 2006.

A minimum of 10 (maximum 12) individuals can participate in the workshop. Expressions of interest will be reviewed by Sean O Toole and Nathi Gumede as KZNSA representative. Successful candidates will be notified in writing and will be asked to demonstrate their availability. Participants must be available for the duration of the workshop. They must be resident in KwaZulu Natal - if from other parts of the province, they will be responsible for their own accommodation and transport.

More information from KZNSA gallery curator Nathi Gumede on 031 202 3686, fax 031 201 8051 or email: curator@kznsagallery.co.za
