NIVEA ACHIEVERS (article first published : 2006-09-3)

NIVEA Achievers is a group exhibition celebrating selected artists who participated in both START. The NIVEA Awards 2005 and 2006. START is an annual competition that seeks to create a platform for up and coming artists in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The competition is an initiative by the NIVEA brand under Beiersdorf South Africa, with expert guidance from judges Storm Janse van Rensburg, Julia Meintjes, Gabi Nkosi, Anthea Martin, S’fiso ka Mkame and Nathi Gumede.

The exhibition serves as a launch pad for a space to be known as the NIVEA Gallery within the KZNSA complex. The initiative seeks to promote up and coming artists by providing a gallery space dedicated to showcasing their work. NIVEA Gallery is the product of a partnership between Beiersdorf South Africa and the KZNSA.

NIVEA Achievers will attempt to celebrate seven artists who have taken the experience of START to new heights. Zama Dunywa, David Buchler, Witty Nyide, Sicelo Ziqubu, Adrienne D’aeth, Lalelani Mbhele and Welcome Danca have all demonstrated the core values of human co-existence associated with this initiative. The selected artists represent aspirations of the programme in that they have used the initial experience of participating in START and gone on to achieve greater heights.

The exhibition is curated by Nathi Gumede, the KZNSA Gallery Curator. It does not by any means attempt to cover all aspects of START, but rather chooses to highlight selected aspects of the competition. Do not miss this landmark event that will change the face of the Visual Art industry of KwaZulu-Natal.

NIVEA Achievers runs in the KZNSA from September 5, opening at 18h00, and runs until September 24.

More information from the KZNSA gallery curator, Nathi Gumede, on 031 202 3686 or 031 277 1703 or 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
