APOLOOSA HORSES (article first published : 2006-08-22)

In September, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery will feature new paintings of Apoloosa horses by Nguni artist David Wheildon Oosthuizen.

“Right under our noses in KwaZulu-Natal are some of the most unusual and beautiful horses one could ever lay one's eyes on,” says David Wheildon Oosthuizen. “Here, in the foothills of the Berg, is the Kamberg valley, home to hundreds of these magnificent animals. We are so used to thinking that the well-known breeds of horses are all that exist, so when faced with multicoloured horses sporting fantastic patterns for the first time, I was blown away.

“Nguni cattle have been a passion for me to paint,” the artist continues. “My family breed Nguni and I have abundant reference at my fingertips, so when one day I was invited to attend a natural “horse- man –ship” clinic on Rick Johnson's farm Sans Souci, I went to see what on earth an Apoloosa was. Stunning. Quite simple. Wonderful to work with, quiet and sure-footed. Their beautiful colouring is spectacular and the transition from Nguni to Apoloosa, easy.

“Just one thing, I was so used to painting cattle, the first horse looked like Darwin's missing link. However, they have improved now and are easily recognizable at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery!”

The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery is situated in Florida Road and the exhibition runs until the end of September.
