SASOL WAX ART AWARD (article first published : 2006-08-20)

The Sasol Wax Art Award, South Africa’s newest accolade for the visual arts, has launched an extensive outreach campaign to nurture the visual arts among communities that have limited access and resources to explore their talents and career potential.

Says Carola Ross, of Carola Ross and Associates, who organise the Award: "Exposure to the visual arts is one of the key focuses of the Awards. The Sasol Wax Art Community Outreach Development Programme is a unique aspect of the award. No other art award has initiated a planned sustained and ongoing development programme aimed to educate aspirant artists and develop existing as well as new skills within the disadvantaged arts sector. We are very excited about the programme."

The programme has four key focuses. This includes career development which takes the form of an appointment of a trainee curator who will be granted a paid internship to study the craft under the Awards curator, Les Cohn. Les Cohn is an experienced arts administrator and curator who works extensively in the South Africa arts and development sector. Michelle Harris, a Masters Student at the University of Johannesburg has been appointed to this post.

The second component of the programme is a series of educational workshops targeting learners of all ages in communities that lack access to form a visual arts training. Centres in Soweto, Alexandra, (Johannesburg) and Zamdela (Sasolburg) have been hosting these workshops, facilitated by three highly respected visual artists, Gamakhulu Diniso, Kagiso Pat Mautloa and Mbongeni Buthelezi.

On a technical level, the participants have been taken through the basics of understanding art as a tool of communication, social and creative expression. With issues prevalent in their community such as poverty HIV/ AIDS and unemployment being used to guide the concepts and content of their works.

The third component of the outreach programme takes the form of education supplements that have been designed as a resource for aspiring artists in the sector. The first of these supplements, developed together with the Sasol New Signatures competition, will be distributed countrywide in the next edition of new arts and culture magazine, Contempo, which is available in bookstores and galleries countrywide.

A final part of this year’s outreach will take the form of guided walkabouts, targeted at school level and tertiary learners, the general public and specific opportunities for Sasol staff.

According to Cobus Jansen of Sasol's corporate communication dept, "Our art @work campaign is more than a tag line. We believe that audience development and education is key to healthy art sector. We encourage our staff to take an active interest in the works of art that occupy their space, so that they take ownership of their environment. Art and its engagement are a part of the corporate culture of our company.”

The highlight of the Sasol Wax Art Award will be the finalists' exhibition and announcement of the award winner later this year in Johannesburg, at the Sasol basement gallery.
