KZNSA SHOP’S BACK (article first published : 2006-08-8)

The popular craft, art and gift shop of the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts has been extended and to celebrate the re-birth of the brand new shop, artists have been invited to take part in a small and exciting exhibition entitled Renaissance. The paintings will be exhibited on the newly enlarged mezzanine area of the shop.

The KZNSA Shop has grown immensely from its humble beginnings in the Overport City Shopping Centre. It took on a life of its own with the building of the KZNSA Gallery Complex in Bulwer Park 10 years ago.

The Shop exists primarily as a financial support to the KZNSA, an association not for gain which supports the visual arts in KZN. A further aim is to support and promote local craft and art as much as possible. Gloria Hoff and Gail Wellbeloved believe that the new shop will enable them to further these aims, and provide a much-needed outlet for local craft and art, through constant product development, provision of opportunities for further training for craftspeople, and regular themed displays of paintings in the shop.

Regular shop customers will be delighted with the new gallery area on the mezzanine floor of the shop which will house a dedicated Carrol Boyes area, combined with select examples of fine local art and craft, including paintings, ceramics, artefacts and jewellery. The ground floor will remain packed to the brim with a cornucopia of gifts and crafts from all over the world, but with a strong emphasis on supporting local craft.

The shop launch will be celebrated with an opening by Dr Devi Rajab, award-winning journalist and psychologist, and loyal KZNSA supporter! This festive occasion will take place on August 16 at 18h00 with jazz artists Zoco Dimande, Susan Barry, Philani Ngidi and Paki Polocelo providing great music from 19h00.

People wanting a light sit-down meal may book a table ahead of the evening – limited to 100 people. Contact Gloria or Gail on 031 202 3686/7 or email shop@kznsagallery.co.za
