THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EQUATOR (article first published : 2006-08-7)

An exhibition by Ilana Seati Erasmus titled The Other Side of the Equator will run in the Mezzanine gallery of the KZNSA Gallery.

Ilana Seati Erasmus is an artist currently based in Margate on the KZN lower South Coast and is a graduate of the Shenkar Institute in Israel. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Textile Chemistry) in 1974 and went on to take part in the famous Johannesburg Art Foundation for a period of two years from 1980 to 1982.

“In a general sense, my work deals with questions of identity,” Ilana Seati Erasmus says of her work. “Using form, colour and content, I question both truth and fantasy in the creation of identity. In our quest for the real, we might inadvertently be giving form to our desires instead.

“Through my work, I reconnect to my history, and give form to its cultural and social motifs. I consider the impact it has had on the various currents of my life, my emotions and my state of mind. In this process, where truth and fantasy intertwine, my identity becomes more fluid and allows more choices to emerge.”

The Other Side of the Equator opens on August 15 at 18h00 to run until September 3. More information from KZNSA gallery curator on 031 202 3686 or 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
