PPC CEMENT AWARDS (article first published : 2006-07-17)

Artists "young" in the art of sculpting, interested in entering this year's PPC Cement Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, will need to submit their entries between September 26 and 29, 2006.

A minimum of five photographs of each sculpture must accompany the entry, including a photograph of the artist alongside the artwork, as well as a comprehensive curriculum vitae. From the initial photographic submissions, the panel of judges will select entries that they deem worthy for submission to the Association of Arts Pretoria for the final judging and Awards exhibition.

Sculptors can enter a maximum of two sculptures, each limited to a size of 2 metres x 2 metres x 2 metres. While materials such as wood, bronze, or glass may be incorporated in the work, concrete must be the main material used; and a technically sound artwork must be entered.

Two overall awards will be presented at the Awards ceremony on November 8: Best Sculpture on Exhibition and Technical Excellence in Concrete Sculpture. Both category winners are awarded R20,000 each and the runner-up in both categories each receive R7,500. In addition, two Merit Awards of R2,500 each are presented to deserving artists who demonstrate skill and ability in concrete sculpture.

An exhibition of selected artworks will be held in the gallery and the PPC Cement Sculpture Garden of the Association of Arts Pretoria from November 8 to 22.

Entries must be submitted using photographic images, digital or processed. Digital photographs must be e-mailed in JPEG format to the official Awards e-mail address concretesculptor@ppc.co.za

Alternatively, entries can be delivered by hand or by post, to the addresses as indicated on the entry form.

Entry forms for the Young Concrete Sculptor Awards are available from Beth Harris at PPC on 011 386 9095 or Nandi Hilliard at the Association of Arts Pretoria on 012 346 3100. Further information at www.ppccement.co.za
