TITTA FASCIOTTI (article first published : 2006-07-11)

The work of the late Titta Fasciotti needs no introduction to South African art lovers as for many years he was one of the country’s most prominent artists, renowned for his landscapes, seascapes and figure studies of Xhosa women. Highly versatile, he was equally at home working in oils, acrylics, ink wash, water-colour, pencil and charcoal.

This year marks the 13th anniversary of his death. It also coincides with the rebirth of the Riverbend Art Gallery at Southbroom. In the 1980’s, the gallery was a home for many of Titta Fasciotti’s works and it is significant that an exhibition of his work should serve as the first exhibition in the new gallery area.

Titta Fasciotti was born in Bergamo Italy in 1927 and, under difficult circumstances, came to reside in South Africa in 1948. His family were all artists and from an early age he was constantly surrounded by art in all its forms. He studied formally at the Accademia di Belle Arti under Professor A Funi and informally under W G Wiles in Knysna, South Africa. Works by his farther who was an Italian prisoner of war held in South Africa will also be exhibited.

More that 50 of Titta Fasciotti’s works will be exhibited until July 16 at the Riverbend Art Gallery. This exhibition will be as much a celebration of Titta Faciotti’s life as a celebration of his immense talent. The gallery is situated at Riverbend Crocodile Farm at Southbroom on the South Coast.
