BUSINESS DAY/BASA AWARDS WINNERS (article first published : 2006-06-2)

Durbanís Bean Bag Bohemia was one of three winners of the Sponsorship by a Small Business category award at the Ninth Annual Business Day/BASA Awards held in Johannesburg recently.

The category deals with smaller companies with 1 to 200 full-time employees and an annual turnover of no more than R10million who give vital support to arts projects. Bean Bag Bohemia was awarded for its BBB Independent Museum/Gallery of Durban Culture. The other two winners were Peter Kroll Designer Tiles cc (PK Tiles) for Swimming Pool Mosaic Project and Thengo Security Services for BOWADEPRO Writing and Acting Project.

Bean Bag was also nominated in the category Sponsorship in Kind, where a company gives non-financial but essential support to the arts. However this award went to Premier Foods for Zindala Zombili.

Another KZN nominee was The Natal Witness/Weekend Witness. Entered in the Showtime Awards & Revue category, the publication was nominated for dedicated arts pages and support for local productions; and The Natal Witness Printing & Publishing Company for The Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

A further KZN nominee was Cell C for Durban Music School in the category Youth Sponsorship. This was won by Primi World for Live@ Primi.

The Mentor of the Year Award went to Barloworld ARTWORKS. Launched in 2005 with the support of Barloworld, the programme is underway in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, with plans to roll out countrywide as business men and women engage directly with arts organisations, sharing skills and expertise to address challenges specific to that arts organisation. The mentoring relationship should demonstrate commitment and care, bringing real benefit to the mentored arts organisation, and be as much an enjoyable growth and learning experience for mentor as mentored arts organisation.
