NEW SIGNATURES COMPETITION 2006 (article first published : 2006-05-24)

Sasol has launched the 17th annual New Signatures competition, presented by the Association of Arts Pretoria. The competitionís total prize money is R100,000, comprising an overall first prize of R60,000, a runner-up award of R15,000 and five merit awards of R5,000 each. The winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum on August 16.

Open for entry to young and upcoming artists aged 18 years and older, the competition provides a platform for young artists to exhibit their works and enter the professional art world. It challenges upcoming artists to apply their skills and express their creative talents. The prestige, exposure and prize money associated with Sasol New Signatures have inspired many important and exciting works of art.

An exciting new addition to the 2006 competition is a series of one-day outreach workshops presented by Sasol New Signatures chairperson, Franci Cronje. These workshops will cover the history and logistics of the competition, concepts and titles of works, presentation techniques, installations, as well as issues related to working in different media and submitting work via the Internet. Individual attention will be given to student proposals and technical problems will also be covered. In Durban the workshop will take place on May 26 from 10h00 to 15h00 at artSPACE Durban, 3 Millar Road, off Umgeni Road, Durban.

Attendance is free of charge but booking is essential. Bookings can be made through Nandi Hilliard on 012 346 3100.

To ensure easy access to the competition, artists are invited to submit one or two art works at six venues across the country or via the Internet. Physical submissions will be accepted at the collections points on July 18 or 19 between 10h00 and 16h00 (in Durban, the collection point is artSPACE Durban). Internet entries may be submitted from June 15 to July 19 at www.sasolsignatures.co.za

Regional selection panels will select approximately 100 works countrywide for the prestigious Sasol New Signatures exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. The exhibition opens on August 16 to run until September 30. An independent selection panel will select the overall winner, runner-up and five merit awards which will be presented at the exhibition opening.

More details and entry forms can be obtained from Nandi Hilliard on 012 346 3100 or on www.artsassociationpta.co.za or www.sasolsignatures.co.za
