SASOL FINALISTS (article first published : 2006-04-24)

Sasol has announced the launch of the 2006 Sasol New Signatures Competition and named the five finalists in the Sasol Wax Art Award. Through these two initiatives Sasol supports the development of upcoming visual arts talent and recognises established artists with combined prize monies of more than R200,000.

“The visual arts play an important role in recording, communicating and commenting on South Africa’s rich social and cultural heritage,” says Sasol CE, Pat Davies. “For more than two decades Sasol has been a committed sponsor of the visual arts, not only through our corporate collection, but also through the sponsorship of competitions and awards recognising the individual.”

Now running in its 17th year, the Sasol New Signatures Competition is one of South Africa’s longest running art competitions aimed at emerging artists aged 18 years and older. In December 2005, Sasol added an exciting new venture to its current portfolio of art sponsorships, the Sasol Wax Art Award. The award celebrates innovation and excellence in the visual arts by recognising professional career artists.

The five artists going through to the final round of the Sasol Wax Art Award are highly respected artists Kim Berman, Andrew Tshabangu, Jeremy Wafer, Diane Victor and Kagiso Pat Mautloa. They will each receive R20,000 to produce a body of work for the Sasol Wax Art exhibition. The selection was made from proposals submitted by the ten semi-finalists for a body of work centred on the use of wax either in process, medium or concept. The Sasol Wax Art Award exhibition will take place in the Sasol Basement Gallery from August 29 to September 15. The winner of the R130,000 award will be announced at the opening of the exhibition.

The Sasol New Signatures competition, presented by the Association of Arts Pretoria, this year offers in prize money R100,000, the winner gets R60,000 the runner-up R15,000 and five merit awards of R5,000 each will be made.

Eligible artists are invited to submit one or two art works at six venues across the country or via the Internet. Physical submissions will be accepted at the collections points on July 18 or 19 between 10h00 and 16h00. Internet entries may be submitted from June 15 to July 19 at www.sasolsignatures.co.za

An exciting new addition to the 2006 competition is a series of one-day outreach workshops presented by Sasol New Signatures chairperson Franci Cronje in Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Stellenbosch. These workshops will cover the history and logistics of the competition, concepts and titles of works, presentation techniques, installations, as well as issues related to working in different media and submitting work via the Internet. Individual attention will be given to student proposals and technical problems will also be covered.

Winners of the Sasol New Signatures Competition will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on August 16. The Sasol New Signatures exhibition takes place at the Pretoria Art Museum from August 16 to October 1.
