TANGENCYA 2 (article first published : 2006-04-23)

Tangencya 2 (a project of Create Africa South), running until April 30, is a multi-media, inter-disciplinary, arts-based, public cultural project with site-specific events located throughout the eThekwini Metro precinct. It projects the city of Durban as a locus of diverse histories and cultural interventions, which contribute to its unique significance. It examines the immediacies of locality in the turbulence of a larger geographic, economic and political landscape. It also questions the politics of touch in a world of shifting boundaries and emergent relationships.

The project has a large performance element and endeavours to touch, reach out and make unknown voices heard. It investigates the implementation of creative practice and speaks to the processes and relevance of creative intervention.

Each artist or group of artists will be assisted by at least one Senior or Masters Fine Arts student from the Durban University of Technology. This is seen as a project in and of itself and will be headed by the Themba Shibase, drawing lecturer at DUT who participated in the "in-between" video project with Dineo during Tangencya 1.

Writer/Theoretician is Rustom Bharucha from India and the curator is Andries Botha (senior lecturer at the Durban University of Technology DUT)

Among the events which have already taken place was the HIV INDABA which raised the question as to why the HIV + rate continues to rise, although millions of Rands are being spent on HIV education/prevention.

Artists involved are Fiona Kirkwood and Leonard Zulu from Durban as well as Oby Obyerodhyambo from Kenya.

Leonard started working with eight women on eight A3 size cloths on April 10 at the Palmer Street offices of Create Africa South. The cloths will later be sewn into a quilt to use in the schools when Oby and Leonard visit them to interact with learners (dates tbc).

On April 20, 21, 25 and 26, Fiona will exhibit her installation which builds on the "Survival" theme of Tangencya 1. Comprising a washing line amongst other elements, it will be displayed outside the Workshop shopping centre in a Gazebo area adjacent to Gugu Dlamini Park. On April 26, Fiona she will host a large public event in the amphitheatre outside the Workshop Shopping Centre. This will include a key note speaker, a drama performance (by a group from Wentworth), a dance performance (a group from Warwick Triangle), music and the distribution of information.

Artists Doung (architect/performer), Miranda (drama lecturer), Clement (honours drama student) will perform in Warwick Triangle on April 25, 26 and 27. They will also interact with and re-affirm their interaction by putting up copies of the drawing (poster) of a mother/woman carrying a dead son (echoing the famous 1976 image) and have invited various organisations and people to attend.

Architect Paul Mikula will innovatively plan the permanent re-establishment of a structure burnt down at the home of Mrs Nkwanyana in Richmond Farm, Kwa Mashu.

Tangencya 2 wishes to share its intervention widely and invites the public and media to drop in on the creative implementation of the various interfaces with the public that will take place.
