SATYAGRAHA- AN ART SHOW (article first published : 2006-04-21)

September 2006 will be the centenary month of Satyagraha. To celebrate this centenary, an exhibition of 40 Indian and 20 South African artists is being organised by Afrikhadi, an India and South Africa based NGO and Travancore Gallery, a Kerala Government sponsored gallery.

Artists are invited to participate on Satyagraha- An Art Show with one work based on the theme of the show.

The Art Show envisages bringing in the already existing representations of Gandhi and Satyagraha along with interpretations of Gandhi by the modern artists. The show will have two sections: Pathways and Footprints.

Pathways will include a selection of photographs specifically of the Satyagraha calendars and cartoons of Gandhi, collected from various collections and museums.

Footprints will be a collection of paintings, sculptures, and graphic prints by the cross section of India’s leading contemporary artists along with artists from South Africa. The organisers expect the artists, to interpret and not eulogise the values of Satyagraha and Gandhian ideology in the contemporary context.

The show is scheduled to be held from September 1 to 15 at Travancore Art Gallery, New Delhi. The organisers are also planning to take the show to Durban and Johannesburg as part of the centenary celebration of Satyagraha.

The organisers take the responsibility of collecting the work from artists’ studios for transportation to Delhi. Travancore Gallery would deduct 40% as gallery charge from sale of the works. The unsold works will be delivered back to the artist soon after the proposed shows at Delhi and Durban.

Participation needs to be confirmed as soon as possible at least by late April]/early May to curator Jayaram Poduval on e-mail: jpoduval@gmail.com or phone 098 24318695.
