SACRAMENTAL TRACES (article first published : 2006-04-3)

Artists Di Miller from Johannesburg and Vee Bauer from KwaZulu-Natal will exhibit together for the first time at Artspace fine art gallery in Johannesburg with their exhibition titled Sacramental Traces.

Di states that her current work "may be seen to loosely fall within the ambit of Ecoart. Broadly, the ethos underpinning Ecoart is one of holism, inclusivity, interrelationships, and interdependency, of nature and all things living.

Of her work, Vee says: "I am fascinated by the mythical, dream like quality of boat and horn forms and ceremonial urns that command such a special position in human history. The relics of ancient cultures also inspire me. Feeding from my 2005 MAFA exhibition, this work deals with the idea of the 'vessel' or 'container' that has multiple readings of preservation, protection and 'journey'. The word 'vessel' can be used in reference to a clay container, a boat or the human form. The 'horn' shape can also be likened to a vessel and has been revered through out time through different cultural ceremonies invoking symbolic, spiritual and mythical tokens. This work is created from clay that has been textured and eroded through sand blasting and then fired using many reduction and smoke firing techniques to give an aged appearance. Re-cycled metal and old bone has been introduced to add an additional element of history."

Sacramental Traces runs at Artspace Fine Art Gallery, 3 Hetty Avenue, Fairland, until April 22. More information from Teresa Lizamore on 082 651 4702, email: artspace@wol.co.za or visit www.artspace-jhb.co.za
