ART IN THE ROSES (article first published : 2006-03-31)

According to Steven Duckworth, owner of Imagine Gallery & Books in The Heritage Market, there are only four rose categories when one visits The Heritage: the actual roses themselves, the Woodrose Restaurant, and Wendy and Michele, the two ‘resident’ artists, who have displayed their paintings every Sunday in the rose gardens since 2001.

The Heritage Art in the Roses has become a destination for many art lovers, and rightly so. The quality of work is outstanding and there is always something interesting to suit most tastes.

Michele Batchelder’s art can be described loosely as ‘fantasy landscape’ using bright and bold colours in her abstracts and gentler, softer tones in her more representative landscapes and magical forest and fairy pictures. Her technique is entirely original and involves additional items such as pieces of mirror and glass and clever little hidden flora and fauna. This all combines to form a very different and truly unique style. Michele has been rated among the top artists at the prestigious Art in the Park exhibition.

Wendy Mills is well-known and respected for her South African landscapes which portray stunning mountain ranges, coastlines and wildlife. Using acrylics, she captures the essence of these scenes in a style of her own with a good eye for light, colour, proportion and detail. All her paintings are classically framed in gilt, and are in great demand. In recent years, she has been number one seller at Art in the Park and consistently achieves top ten status.

On the first Sunday of each month, Michele and Wendy are joined by several other artists including Thelma Whiting (watercolourist). All the paintings on display are affordably priced and credit card facility is available at the gallery for customer convenience. The artists will also gladly undertake commissions for those customers who want something ‘special’.

“What Michele and Wendy and accompanying artists have done for The Heritage is fantastic,” says Steven Duckworth. “They display week in and week out, rain or shine, and make a great team. I am sure all art lovers will join with me in giving them full praise for their dedication and commitment which we greatly value.”
