URBANPLAYMOBILE (article first published : 2006-03-31)

Entrants in the Autodesk Revit UrbanPlayMobile design competition must create a roving event ‘unit’ to promote public urban culture, awareness and exchange - and, in so doing, invent a new use and demand for public space. UrbanPlayMobiles could be used for film screenings, performances, recordings, marketing evenThe design criteria include portability, flexibility, identity and branding, budget and strategy in terms of travel, arrival and build-up, the event itself and departure. Entry is open to built environment professionals and students.ts, fashion shows, edutainment and other yet-to-be-invented uses.

The intention is that the winning project will be developed, built and deployed for events.

The judging panel comprises: Professor ‘Ora Joubert, head of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Pretoria; Peter Fattinger, Technical University, Vienna; architect, artist and urban activist, and Tatjana Dzambazova, architect and Autodesk Revit Building product manager at Autodesk in Europe.

The UrbanPlayMobile competition has been launched as part of the Autodesk vision of ‘Helping Build Africa’, with the company entering into a partnership with sharpCITY, to promote a vibrant local design culture. sharpCITY is an urban research, events and exhibitions company, managed by young architects and urban activists.

The first prize for the professional category is a return flight for one to Barcelona and Bilboa, Spain, five days’ accommodation and local travel, as well as a commercial seat of Autodesk Revit. The total value is R75,000. The second prize is a commercial seat of Autodesk Revit, valued at R45,000. The student category prize is a Dell Precision M65 mobile workstation and a six-month internship with the purpose of developing the winning design. The prize value is R30,000.
