TAY DALL (article first published : 2006-03-30)

She is considered to be one of South Africa's foremost abstract artists. Now, in her career's largest solo exhibition, she will show more than 200 works at Kizo Art Gallery at Gateway.

Consummate professional. Impassioned individual. Visionary. Non-conformist. Tay Dall. These are but some of the ways in which to describe South Africa's leading modern artist. To actually experience her latest collection of work, however, can be likened to embarking on a highly-charged journey through time and her mind's perceptual framework. Kizo's Natalie Bradfield and Craig Mark have unveiled what is arguably Tay Dall's most expansive and captivating series of work yet.

Forever pushing the boundaries, Tay Dall takes her audience and leads them through the complexities of her imagination, into a world that is defined only by the reaches of her boundless and surrealistic perceptions of the world in which she finds herself. When it comes to Dall's exhibition at Kizo Art Gallery, this certainly is the case and Out of the Box MMVI, A Series of New Modern Art is a celebration of the artists work and the levels of confidence and maturity she has reached during her career.

Having enjoyed the success of a career that has spanned some 20 years to date, Tay Dall is showing no signs of slowing down. At the largest solo exhibition of her career, to be held at Kizo - KZN’s premier commercial art gallery - Tay Dall will exhibit some 200 pieces of her most exceptional work.

"This is an expansive collection of work that showcases Tay Dall's diversity and sheer brilliance as an inspired and gifted artist," says Craig Mark, Director of Kizo. “Out of the Box MMVI, A Series of New Modern Art promises to highlight the zeniths of her creativity over time, taking one on a personal exploration through her imagination which stretches to the outer limits and then reaches beyond.”

Far from 'way-out', Tay Dall's work is defined by her classical training yet unencumbered approach to the canvas and her medium. A most prolific artist, she is known the world over for her diversity and reticence to conform to a single genre or style. "In the early days of my career, I was encouraged to focus on and develop one style and stick to it forever amen, and by the time I was dead I would be famous, book closed, story over,” she explains. “But here I am twenty years down the line and much to the chagrin of art purists, I am constantly evolving, introducing new styles and embracing the moment my art takes me to."

By adopting an evolutionary approach to her work, this artist has established herself not only as a talent to be taken seriously but as a firm favourite amongst collectors and critics alike. Her work has been exhibited in leading local and international galleries, and she has accumulated a following that stretches from Holland to Spain, London, New York, Constantia in the Cape to Kizo Art Gallery, KwaZulu-Natal.

Kizo will play host to Dall's exceptional exhibition and, with the gallery's theme of abundance and the sheer volume of the work to be displayed, clear synergies have emerged between the two. Apart from the fact thatOut of the Box is her most expansive exhibition, this body of work clearly communicates her arrival as one of our leading talents.

On her approach to Out of the Box, she says: "The changes of my technique, genre and choices of medium may be my response to the so-called modern world as I see it, or and perhaps more accurately, this is a bold testament to the confidence and maturity that I have developed over the span of my career. My exhibition at Kizo is the culminating point of a life long rehearsal for the big show."

Kizo's voluminous space lends itself as the ultimate vehicle to Tay's exhibition. Natalie Bradfield, Kizo Director and co-owner is especially confident and excited about the forthcoming showcase and of this says, "Kizo was developed for this exact reason. To provide a platform to both promote and exhibit the work of our countries rare and abundant talent, and most specifically to encourage the people of Kzn to invest in and support the arts. A cheaply produced print from China can and never will replace an original art work. We are confident that Tay's significant showcase will touch and inspire the public, not only through the impressive volume of work that she has produced, but by the fact that she is telling a story, her story, in a collective series of artwork that transcends the boundaries of tradition."

Each of the series has something fresh, different and interesting to offer and shares an intricate and complex story about the artist. The messages and mysterious meanings addressed in her works hold what she considers to be of value, and these are communicated in a visual truth. "The ideas behind the messages and meanings however, are universal and therefore purposefully open for individual interpretation," she comments.

Out of the Box MMVI, A Series of New Modern Art is the culmination of the artists most inspired thoughts, subjects and ideas and Kizo is her platform to reach and communicate with those wanting to experience and absorb her unique and special take on the world. Fresh. Unleashed. Thinking and delving beyond the boundaries, this exhibition is a fitting tribute and masterful showcase of an artist’s work and her search for truth.

Out of the Box MMVI, A Series of Modern Art runs at Kizo Gallery until April 9.
