WRINKLY ELEPHANTS (article first published : 2006-03-25)

Itís a quantum leap from small wooden souvenirs for tourists to a larger than life-size herd of nine elephants.

Initiated by Durbanís internationally-renowned sculptor Andries Botha, the elephants form part of a project carried out by ten local artists in a workshop at the Durban Institute of Technologyís Department of Fine Arts (Sculpture).

The artists, who normally carve small wooden souvenirs for a living, have completed the biggest project of their careers. Nine elephants of different sizes will be exhibited at the Beaufort art exhibition at Ostend beach in Belgium, along with work by 10 other groups of artists from around the world.

The elephants are built on steel frame skeletons designed by Andries Botha. The artists then added random off-cuts of wood secured with bars and countless bolts to create the animalsí thick, wrinkly skin.
