SIYANDA MSOMI (article first published : 2006-03-7)

An exhibition by Siyanda Msomi is running at the BAT Centre.

Siyanda Msomi works in a number of mediums: oils on canvas, photography and drawing. He deals with the theme of labour which, he says, “remains largely invisible to the eyes of society, which instead chooses to concentrate on the outcomes.”

“My work does not address limited audiences of the museum and gallery,” he says, “but also wrestles with the form and context of the public space. I am not necessarily interested in the political text of labour but I am more focused on my understanding of the integrity of labour and respect for humanity.”

The subjects on the painting are focusing on the idealization of manual labour in order for us to consider the significant of "invisible human" in our materialistic culture and to reattach to the ideas of the significance between that is currently absent to those citizens. All these people are not being recognized by the citizens of this country. The pause on the photographs gives them power and make them more important in the space which they occupy. The space becomes less important. It makes them important, special, and also brings alert and attention.

Siyanda Msomi’s exhibition runs at the BAT Centre until March 14. More details from Njabulo on 031 332 0451 or email: events@batcentre.co.za
