AZARIA MBATHA WORKS (article first published : 2000-02-5)

Running at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg until February 13 is the Azaria Mbatha Retrospective exhibition. Curated by the Durban Art Gallery, it traces Azaria Mbatha's development as an artist from his first linocuts to some of his recent works, and includes screenprints, etchings and drawings.

One of South Africa's finest printmakers, Azaria Mbatha has lived in Sweden for the past 33 years yet he maintains that he is still close to the little village of Mabeka in the Mahlabathini district of KZN where he was born. "Identity is not a question of geography," he says.
