DIAKONIA – NEVER AGAIN (article first published : 2006-02-14)

The Diakonia Council of Churches – the Durban-based ecumenical organisation – celebrates 30 years of service to the community on March 25 with a series of events to be held in and around Durban.

Among these is an exhibition titled Diakonia – Never Again opening shortly at the Durban Art Gallery.

The Durban Art Gallery will show Images of Human Rights print portfolio, a collection of works by South African artists produced by Artists for Human Rights in 1996 to celebrate the nation’s new Bill of Rights. Works from the permanent collection by various photographers will also be featured alongside sculpture by Dina Cormick, prints by Azaria Mbatha and posters by Maria Criticos.

The African Art Centre has also lent works for display dealing with human rights issues. The exhibition will be an artistic celebration of the principles on which the new democracy was founded and will depict South African artists’s commitment to social documentary.

Diakonia is preparing to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a week of special events. Starting with a thanksgiving service on the afternoon of March 19, it is planned that the week will include a film festival, a celebration of Human Rights Day on March 21 with music and displays, the launch of a theological challenge on the economy, and a gala dinner.

Diakonia – Never Again opens at the Durban Art Gallery to run until March 26. The Durban Art Gallery is situated in the City Hall, entrance in Smith Street opposite the Playhouse. More information on 031 311 2262.
