NIVEA ART AWARD (article first published : 2005-12-4)

The KwaZulu-Natal-born art competition, Start. The Nivea Art Award, swings into action again and the search is on for promising artists who want to paint their way to a successful career.

The theme is “moments of interaction between people, reflecting basic principles of human co-existence: care, reliability, understanding, humanity, love and harmony”. These sentiments reflect Nivea’s core values.

The competition opened up new opportunities for 2005 winner, Welcome Danca. This talented artist has now completed his diploma in graphic design and is employed painting murals and art deco and designing the company website. “This competition has given me invaluable exposure and has given me confidence in my artistic ability,” Welcome says. “It has allowed me to further my career, and be recognised as an artist on the up-and-up. I am also very excited to be working on my own exhibition. The prize also gave me the opportunity to purchase everything I need to paint – easels, paints, brushes – and I also put down a deposit for a house.”

Start. The Nivea Art Award competition is open to talented artists over 18 who have not held their own exhibitions, nor won any major art competitions. The opportunity awaits for the lucky winner to exhibit a commissioned artwork at KZNSA Gallery where it would be viewed by well-known art patrons, collectors and the public. There are substantial cash prizes to be won: first prize R20,000, second R10,000 and third R5,000. The final works will be catalogued in a stylish booklet.

A prestigious panel of five judges, all well-known artists and/or curators and gallery managers, will be tasked with selecting 20 finalists from entries received from throughout KZN. These finalists will each receive R1,200 by NIVEA to create a unique commissioned artwork.

The 20 works from the finalists will then be exhibited for sale at an awards ceremony and exhibition opening at KZNSA Gallery on June 27 when the winners will be announced and awards and cash prizes presented. The exhibition runs from June 28 to July 16, to allow the public the chance to view or purchase the works.

To enter, all you need to do is submit your completed entry, along with photographs of three to four of your existing artworks and a short artist’s statement. Entries close January 27, 2006.

Entry forms for START. THE NIVEA ART AWARD are available from KZNSA Gallery, African Art Centre, BAT Centre and Art Spectrum in Durban and from the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. More information from 031 573 2154 or e-mail: nivea.art.award@beiersdorf.com

For artists who don’t have their own cameras, two galleries will take photographs of the artists’ three or four works required for the entry form: KZNSA Gallery (January 11 and 12) and African Art Centre (January 18 and 19).
