INDIGO FIELDS (article first published : 2005-11-30)

An exhibition titled Fresh Air 2005 is to be held at Indigo Fields in Nottingham Road. It will feature work by renowned sculptors Carl Roberts, Llewellyn Davies, Dave Tomlinson, Andrew Walford, Godfrey Zuma, Russel Papworth, Tim Quirke and many others as well as emerging sculptors locally and further afield.

The exhibition will run from December 2 to January 17, providing an opportunity to buy or commission work as well as to view the art in a natural setting.

Unlike the formality of the Roman Gardens or the later British Styles where sculpture was often used to define status and wealth amongst the noblemen, open air exhibitions are often an interplay between artwork and the environment, a way of bringing as much interest to the art work as to the environment in which it is placed. So, it asks for a very different response from the viewer than one who finds himself in the often intimidating shroud of the more formal art gallery or museum.

The vision of an annual outdoor sculpture exhibition is to take an existing space, ordinarily enjoyed by many people of various interests to a different level. Indigo Fields is a place where many people visit, if not for the accommodation or the African Day Spa, then maybe specifically for the gallery, coffee shop or newly established, organic Health Studio. Even the children’s playground currently under construction, is an artwork, carefully designed to bring out the creative spirit and imagination of the young mind.

Celebrate the opening of Indigo’s First Annual Outdoor Exhibition on December 4 for a picnic on the lawns amongst the lavender fields. A classical piano recital by Christopher Duigan will take place in the lounge of the Country House at 11h00 and again at 15h00. Early booking is essential as seats are limited. Tickets for the recital R40.
