ELEMENTS (article first published : 2005-11-16)

An exhibition of photographs titled Elements by Fransiolentru Pretorius opens on November 21 at 18h30 at the “criticalmoment” gallery at the City Campus of the Durban Institute of Technology.

Fransiolentru Pretorius is Associate Director in the Fine Art Department at DIT. She will present a portfolio of photographs, submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for third year Photography. Her work deals with the elements of water, air, earth and fire as manifested in a variety of landscapes. The landscapes vary between primal, raw, landscapes and Arcadian landscapes created by human hands. Elements of her drawings are incorporated into some of the scenes, to serve as metaphors for the aesthetic order and culture bestowed upon untamed nature through human intervention.

Fransie has always been interested in painting or drawing objects and interiors relating to her cultural background. Her interest in gardening, nature and plants, resulted in large-scale drawings and paintings of individual plants and botanical studies of seeds and flowers. She combines some of her own drawings with her photographs, taking them beyond the point of being mere presentations of a particular landscape.

In the past photography, has been used to convey a single viewpoint as seen in a fraction of a second. David Hockney's photo collages are well-known examples of exploring the notion of time in space. In Hockney's work the integrity of each photograph remains intact, whilst Fransie integrates a large number of photographs to create a single visual experience.

Fransie creates painterly, composite images to explore all the visual, tactile and sensory experiences of the viewer faced with the wonders of nature. Experiencing nature requires the element of time and consecutive looking to absorb the richness of colours and textures found in nature. She wants the viewer to share in her experiences of nature by presenting a view of all the elements found at a particular scene. Combining photos taken from different angles and viewpoints, she subtly blends and transforms to transport the viewer into a reality which is no longer only that which was captured through her lens.

Elements will be on display in the “criticalmoment” gallery, Room 151, DIT City Campus, Smith Street in Durban from November 18 to 24. The gallery will be open between 10h00 and 15h00 daily.
