METAL 2006 (article first published : 2005-11-14)

Carrol Boyes Functional Art has announced that the theme for the next METAL New Designer Search Competition is Flame. This follows METAL 2005 where entrants were invited to submit a prototype of a set of salt and pepper cruets.

The second Carrol Boyes Functional Art METAL New Designer Search invites entrants to submit a design of a candleholder or oil lamp; anything that can contain and enhance a flame. The prototype can be designed to hold any shape or size of a candle, from small tea-lights to long, thin dinner table candlesticks or short, thick long-burning candles. Oil lamps with wicks will also be considered. The key word for the theme is flame. No lamps featuring electrical fittings, bulbs or batteries will be accepted.

Carrol Boyes, convenor of METAL and founder and CEO of Carrol Boyes Functional Art, explains her choice: “The flame is one of humankind’s most ancient tools and it has always symbolised the warmth and comfort of home. Although we used to use candles and lamps for light and warmth, today we use them to create a special mood and ambience. This year’s theme is exciting because it allows for a very broad range of interpretations that are not limited by size or shape.”

Carrol Boyes is looking for original, fresh design talent and is not interested in any styles that may be derivative of her own.

No special experience or design qualifications are necessary in order to enter. All entrants have to do is design an innovative functional art candle holder or oil lamp of any size, make a three-dimensional example of their design and submit it, along with a completed entry form, a copy of their ID and a one page CV to Carrol Boyes Functional Art.

Aspirant product designers should design with pewter, stainless steel or aluminium in mind, as these are the materials in which Carrol Boyes Functional Art specialises. Prototypes can be made from any material, such as wood, ceramics, wax, wire or plastic. Carrol Boyes herself makes all the prototypes of her new designs in ceramic.

The inaugural METAL New Designer Search took place in 2005, with almost 300 entries from around the country vying for Carrol’s eye and the R50 000 award. The overall winner was Zani Marais from George, whose innovative design of a set of salt and pepper shakers in the form of a pepper granule and a salt crystal is currently in manufacture with Carrol Boyes Functional Art.

Entries for METAL 2006 close on February 15, 2006. Entry forms available at Carrol Boyes stockists country wide, as well as public libraries, post offices, community art centres and galleries. Entry forms can also be downloaded from www.carrolboyes.co.za
