KONAKONA (article first published : 2005-10-15)

The BAT Centre is hosting an exhibition of paper sculptures by Sicelo Ziqubu and Nkosinathi Dumakude titled Konakona in the Democratic Gallery.

Nkosinathi was born in Newcastle and grew up in Ezakheni, near Ladysmith. His interest in art began during his primary school days and he practiced by redrawing the illustrations from a book called Masihambisan, a Grade One teaching tool used in the Bantu Education System.

He began selling his pieces to his teachers in Grade Three and he also began experimenting with wire sculptures and forms at this time. He made wire cars and trucks which he sold but he confesses that the most popular vehicles he made were ambulances and two trucks!

Nkosinathi is inspired by architectural structure and form and he is drawn to examples of classical design. He is a self-taught draftsman and he has exhibited his trademark stadiums in Durban. He has a Grade 9 and this is his first workshop as a facilitator. He has worked with the selected students from the BAT Centre's Artists In Action Residency programme, imparting his technical and artistic skills in this unique form of visual arts.

Konakona runs until October 18. More information from Njabulo Mtshali on 03 332 0451.
