RED EYE INTERSECTION (article first published : 2005-09-26)

In the most potent synthesis of the radical, the unconventional, the experimental and the avant-garde Durban has ever seen, Red Eye Intersection on September 30 at the Durban Art Gallery from 18h00 unleashes an unprecedented onslaught of youthful creative energy.

Preparing to frighten the local art entity out of its stokies and into its beartrap-proof dancing skats, Red Eye Intersection transforms the Durban Art Gallery from a sweet old lady into a voodoo biker mariachi. It weaves its cyberstatic spells to scare the streets into the Gallery and goad the Gallery into the streets in a supercollider of such intensity that atoms may split; unstable chain reactions might occur and massive stimulation of mind, body and soul will most definitely take place.

Red Eye is already renowned for creating an interactive multi-media arts forum. This time round, the gloves are off and the thrusters set on hyper-drive as the event hurls itself at the 21st Century with breathtaking force. Forget that nervous little adjective “edgy”: this Red Eye wields a cutting edge that plunges through all the wasted flesh and bone of contemporary culture to let flow the marrow. The true spirit of daring, risk, adventure and astonishment is re-awakened as interactive installations such as you’ve never seen before join deconstructed fashion; corrupted computer games; video anarchy; weird science and improvised live music with DJ’s providing the soundtrack to an unstable cosmos.

It’s as if Attila the Hun has been resurrected as a malevolent hacker and is running his Armageddon Simulation Programme. It’s the night of the living dots when all the helpless pixels in the parallel dimension rise up and get their revenge on the great Pac-Man in the sky.

Amongst the carefully co-ordinated chaos inside the gallery you will find Tam Young’ s interactive game and video installation; Mlu Zondi’s game board installation and ongoing performance; Insect’s interactive maze installation with video, performance and sound; Roger Miller’s digital installation with live performer, data generator and interactive sound installation; Desmond Zeederberg’s nail & linoleum installation; Robert Fraser’s sound installations in the gallery and toilet; Brigitta Gaylard’s interactive boards; Simon Gush’s process-based installation; Siyanda Duma’s performance piece; Gary Te Brugge’s interactive computer game and installation; Bronwyn Lace’s science/art site-specific installation and the incredible Sound Room Collaboration in which almost a dozen musicians improvise upon instruments and computerised equipment for an ongoing performance led by Portia Malunga.

Outside the Gallery, the senses will be seduced by the Linea Academy’s fashion show; Niel Coppen’s performance; the Mkhumbane Blues isicathamiya group; the live band/dance fusion of the Big Idea; experimental rock with Rouge and Habit To; mellow melodies from Deluxe and the future sounds of Durban courtesy of a DJ and Ntokozo.

Red Eye Intersection has been curated by prominent scions of the Durban art underground Dean Henning, Rike Sitas, Vaughn Sadie and Doung Anwar Jahangeer.
