CELEBRATING THE SPIRITS (article first published : 2005-09-1)

Celebrating the spirits is an exhibition of linocut prints by Gabisile Nkosi to open at the African Art Centre on September 14.

Gabisile’s linocut prints for this exhibition are inspired by the women who have influenced her, especially her mother especially and her friends. Mama wami means my mother and Wandile is the name of a special friend.

Born in Durban in Umlazi in 1974 and educated at Ogwini High School, Gabisile was later inspired at high school by her art teacher as well as by Pat Khosa from the Durban Art Gallery where she attended art lessons as well as at the African Art Centre.

She won the BMW "Collecting Art" first prize in 1991 and was awarded "Most promising artist of the year" in 1993 which was presented by school inspector, Jannie Van Heerden.

Her work experience has seen her conducting workshops at the African Art Centre, working as Art Assistant at the BAT Centre and later assisting in the BAT Shop. In 1999, she worked as co-ordinator and art workshop facilitator for the Artworks Trust and in 2001 co-ordinated art workshops for Lovelife Keylene Levack. She achieved a BAFA (Bachelor in Technology of Fine Art) from the Durban Institute of Technology in 2002 and in the same year worked as studio and programme assistant at Caversham for Artists and Writers.

Gabisile has appeared in international exhibitions as well as many exhibitions around South Africa. She has also worked on many murals in and around Durban and appears in numerous public and private collections, including that of Oprah Winfrey.

Celebrating the Spirits will be opened officially by Liz Palmer at 17h30 on September 14. More information on 031 304 7915.
