BROCHURE: ART DECO DURBAN (article first published : 2005-08-30)

In collaboration with the Durban Art Deco Society, The Alliance Française is to host a small exhibition to celebrate the printing of the Brochure of Art Deco Durban by the eThekwini Municipality City Architects, with input from the Durban Art Deco Society.

“We are showing off our free brochure and some aspects of Art Deco with an input from local schools who are studying this style in their syllabus,” say the Art Deco Society. “This is part of our heritage and should be appreciated and nurtured by all of us.”

The Durban Art Deco Society is one of 28 societies around the world which belong to the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS). The societies meet every two years in an international city with an Art Deco heritage. In May 2005 the 8th World Art Deco Congress was held in New York, and the message back from New York is that Durban’s brochure is one of the best they have seen.

In 2003 the 7th World Art Deco Congress was held in Cape Town and Durban. The international delegates were very impressed by Durban’s Art Deco buildings, some of which are world class and now attract an increasing number of tourists.

Art Deco is one of the most important and all embracing styles of the 20th Century in the design not only of architecture but also furniture, textiles, sculpture, fashion, jewellery, ceramics, glassware, lighting, graphic arts, etc. and has had a great influence on contemporary design.

The Alliance Française is situated at 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside, and the exhibition opens at 11h00 on September 3.
