A DECADE OF DEMOCRACY (article first published : 2005-08-22)

From August 30, the KZNSA Gallery will host A Decade of Democracy: Witnessing South Africa is a returning exhibition of South African art, which travelled to various venues in the USA during the past 18 months.

The exhibition marks the historic celebration of South African democracy through the visions of emerging contemporary South African artists. The exhibition opened at the Museum of the National Centre of Afro-American Artists in Boston, MA in April 2004 and travelled to numerous other centres in the US. The KZNSA Gallery will be the only venue in South Africa to house the exhibition.

The 20 young artists featured in A Decade of Democracy: Witnessing South Africa examine ways that identity has been defined, searching for means of expression that are more personal in experience and universal in understanding. Artist Thando Mama and Rudzani Nemasetoni reflect differently on how the state defined identity. Rudzani Nemasetoni uses images from his family’s “Pass Books”, the notorious South Africa identification book that non-whites had to carry, while Thando Mama uses his own body as a site for the recovery of meaning and power associated with the black subject.

Artists such as Nkosinathi Khanyile, Mthunzi Ndimande, and Nuripa Singh explore influences of African heritage in modern culture. Through the use of natural materials and implementation of traditional skills such as grass weaving, they recover and celebrate an African heritage that is marginalised and threatened by modern society. Brenton Maart and Nicolas Hlobo present a critique of community life that is specific to issue concerning sexuality where sexual freedom continues to be overshadowed by the AIDS epidemic. These artists, and others in this exhibition, present a variety of complex issues about the new South Africa relating to urbanism, xenophobia, violence, AIDS and poverty.

A Decade of Democracy: Witnessing South Africa articulates the variety of strategies that artists use to connect their living history with the past. The framework is to allow for the works to create a conversation that explores the impact of apartheid witnessing the complexities and multitude of issues that South Africa is confronting today. The exhibition will act as a catalyst to generate discussion around the progress and change that has occurred over the last decade, transforming a society struggling to reconcile its past legacy. It presents a transient moment in our history, portraying how emerging artists negotiate between what was, what is, and what is to come.

The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour catalogue, edited by Gary van Wyk with contributions by Robin Chandler, Annie Coombes, Thembinkosi Goniwe and Andries Oliphant, amongst others. Limited copies of the book are available for sale at the KZNSA Gallery at R120 per copy.

The exhibition is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. sondela is a project of the South Africa Development Fund Inc. The exhibition’s South African leg is funded with a grant to the KZNSA Gallery from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

A Public Forum will be held on August 31 at 18h30. Titled Art and Activism: Filling the Gaps, it will be led by Dr. Ashwin Desai and Thembinkosi Goniwe. All are welcome and entrance is free with a complimentary glass of wine.
