BONISA OPEN DAY (article first published : 2005-08-21)

The next Open Day hosted by Bonisa Private Gallery in Kloof will feature sculptures by Noria Mabasa. The exhibition will be opened at 11h00 on September 4 by Durbanís well known sculpture Carl Roberts and Noria Mabasa will be in residence to meet viewers.

Born on May 1938 in the Limpopo Province, Noria Mabasa followed her dreams and started to make clay figures in 1967. In 1976 she discovered the potential of woodcarving.

International recognition for her art came in the 1990ís when she was included in the exhibition, Art from South Africa at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, UK. She also appeared in the Incroci del Sud at the Venice Bienniale in 1993 and, in the same year, Southern Cross at the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands.

In 2002 Noria became the recipient of the prestigious National Order of the Baobab, the Presidentís award for exceptional achievements in unique forms of art under trying circumstances.

The gallery will also exhibit paintings by Hannes Harris.

The Open Day takes place on September 4 and viewing is from 10h00 to 16h00. There will be a further open viewing on September 7 at the same times.
