KEBBLE DEADLINE (article first published : 2005-07-17)

The Brett Kebble Art Awards (The Kebble), South Africa's premier award for contemporary visual arts is about to make the all important selection for the finalists' exhibition.

The decision-making team consisting of curator Clive van den Berg, a distinguished artist, co-curator Kathryn Smith, a former Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year and curatorial fellow Nandipha Mntambo will visit Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg and Giyani during August to view submissions.

David Barritt, The Kebble producer said that last year's Kebble attracted a record number of entries and record attendance at a South African art exhibition. "Interest is so high this year that we are expecting even more entries and this is going to place our curatorial team under considerable pressure because it is a very difficult task to assess a wide variety of work in pressurised circumstances. For this reason we are going to be very strict about the closing date. It would be a terrible shame if good work was excluded because an artist missed the deadline and so I urge those working towards The Kebble to pay careful attention to the dates for submissions."

South African artists living anywhere in the world and artists of any nationality living and working in South Africa, who are over 21, can qualify for the Awards which carry the largest purse of all South African art awards.

For the next Kebble artists need to submit new work that has been produced in the 12 months prior to the closing date for submissions. The work may not have been published or exhibited elsewhere.

There are no categories to constrain artists, they have a completely free hand to produce whatever they can imagine without limitations.

In addition to the top award of R200,000, five others of R60,000 and a number of merit awards, a new award of R60,000, with the theme of Beauty, has been added. It is the first of a series of themed prizes that will become an annual feature of The Kebble. The Beauty prize will be awarded at the judges' discretion in addition to the other awards, and artists should not enter specifically for this award.

"For many artists, conventions of beauty are there to be challenged, linked as they have been to social, cultural and political positions that are being overturned," says curator Clive van den Berg.

Regional centres across the country will accept submissions between August 11 and 15, 2005. Curator Clive van den Berg, co-curator Kathryn Smith, fellow curator Nandipha Mntambo and the selectors will travel to these centres to view the original works and select the finalists who will exhibit at The Kebble.

KZN submissions can be sent to Carol Brown at the Durban Art Gallery, 2nd Floor City Hall, Smith Street, Durban (Phone 031 311 2269)

Artists wishing to enter installations will once again have the opportunity to provide the selectors with a proposal for consideration. Provision has also been made for artists who are unable to send their work to one of the regional centres owing to geographical or cost restrictions. They may enter by sending photographs of their artwork by email or post to the Awards headquarters in Cape Town: The Kebble, 42 Upper Torquay Avenue, Bishopscourt, 7708, Cape Town.

Entries for the third Kebble Art Awards close on August 15. Entry forms are available from www.thekebble.co.za, the regional selection centres or from the organisers at 021 761 0549, or art@barritt.co.za

The finalists' exhibition will be held from February 4 to 23 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The recipients of the third Brett Kebble Awards will be announced at a function on February 11, 2006.
