ARTISTS’ SPACES (article first published : 2005-07-10)

Opening on July 12 - the same day as the KZNSA celebrations (see separate article) - is a photographic exhibition and book of 100 KwaZulu-Natal artists in their studios and work places, by leading Durban photographers, in the KZNSA’s Mezzanine Gallery

During the past couple of months, the KZNSA has documented and photographed one hundred artists with close relationships to the organisation, either as exhibitors, friends or members. A team of photographers has tracked down and snapped artists in their working environments, studio spaces, and inspirational sites to provide a complex and intriguing portrait of artists active in Durban.

What is revealed is a diversity of approaches and activities, and the exhibition and book will be a significant contribution to profile the significant wealth of creative forces resident here.

Participating photographers were Val Adamson, Angela Buckland, Storm Janse van Rensburg, Ros Sarkin, Harry Lock, Rafs Mayet and Jeeva Rajgopaul. The project also aims to build capacity with young artists and photographers and in partnership with the Durban Institute of Technology Fine Art Department six trainees were given the opportunity to work with professional photographers and also have their images published. The participating artists were Ernest Tshiamo, Charles Musetsi, Abhi Indrarajam, Melvin Pather, Godfrey Mpuse and Thoko Mtshali.

The book and exhibition is generously supported by the SEM Charitable Trust. The book paper was sponsored by Mondi Business Paper.
