10 of the Best is a multi-media exhibition running in the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mcunu Gallery featuring the works of 10 of the BAT Centre’s past students from the Artists in Action Residency Programme.

Artists include Lungelo Gumede, Langa Magwa, Siyabonga Mofokeng, Vumani Zuma, Xolani Khumalo, Newboy Dlamini and Mandla Gasa. Works include pencil drawings, oils on canvas and sculpture.

Langa Magwa is a renowned Durban based artist. His works have been commissioned by the likes of the Durban Art Gallery and the Tatham Gallery and he has exhibited in Durban and Cape Town. His trademark is the use of animal skins in his sculpture, including snake, cow, goat and buckskins. He has worked in Norway, acted as a facilitator at the African Art Centre and as a lecturer at Durban Institute of Technology.

Lungelo Gumede was born in Clermont township near Pinetown. After matriculating from Mabayana High School in Ndwedwe (north of Durban), he studied as a BAT resident artist in the 2003 Artists in Action Residency Programme. He is currently studying towards his National Diploma of Fine Arts at DIT, where he is in his second year. He was awarded the DIT Vice -Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in 2004. Lungelo has painted portraits of various dignitaries and celebrities and has exhibited internationally in New York and East Hampton and is a South Africa member of the Global Youth Parliament.

The exhibition runs from July 8 to 27 in the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mcunu Gallery.
