ARTIST PRESENTS PRINT (article first published : 1999-12-29)

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary this year of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a group of human rights activists and artists calling themselves Artists for Human Rights have produced an International Print Portfolio consisting of images based on the 30 articles of the UDHR. Each participating artist has come from one of 30 countries which have suffered great abuse of human rights. Each print depicts or illustrates one of the articles of the UDHR. The International Print Portfolio exhibition is currently running at the Durban Art Gallery and a number of the international artists visited Durban for the exhibition’s opening.

Among these was South African artist Mmakgabo Mapula Helen Sebidi who presented her print to the Dalai Lama on December 6 after he had inaugurated the Human Rights Educational Programme at the Durban Art Gallery which was a runner-up to the International Print Portfolio exhibition. Mmakgabo Mapula Helen Sebidi, who lives in Johannesburg, studied in the 70’s under John Koenakeefe Mohl and later worked at the Johannesburg Art Foundation under the guidance of Bill Ainslie. In 1988 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to travel to the USA where she worked at the Millay for the Arts in New York. In 1989 she was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Fine Art and the AA Vita Award. She has exhibited extensively in South Africa and abroad.
