A KINDOV A PAWTRAYT OV A KINDOV A GUY (article first published : 2005-06-20)

a Kindov a pawtrayt ov a Kindov a guy is an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by Hilary Graham which opens in the NSA Gallery’s Main & Mezzanine Gallery on June 21.

The NSA Gallery presents an overview of recent and not-so-recent works by renowned artist Hilary Graham, before his relocation from Durban to the Eastern Cape later in the year. Prior to living in Durban, Graham was the head of department at the Fine Art Department, Fort Hare University. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections in South Africa and abroad.

When asked for additional information on his work and life, the following note was received by the NSA Gallery:

“I am instructed by the Condottiere, Yhren Ecrete to speak for his artist Hilary Graham.

“Graham was for many years the official painter to the pataphysician Y. Maharg, and chronicled his exploits. These works did much to record the events of Maharg’s life and his travels. He was accompanied by the baboon Bosse-de-Nage. They travelled in the pataphysical craft Anotur Neves, crewed by Planos and Pataphysicians. Maharg committed suicide in 1999, and since then Graham has been employed by the condottiere Ecrete. The original crew and myself are now wanderers on a new craft The Samurai in Autumn. The most recent individual to join the pataphysical saraband is one known as Nemorensis, a dangerous fellow, uncompromising and robust. The “margins” of Nemorensis represent that zone of danger in the journeys through chaos and darkness.

“Graham is a surly person, he generally shuns any approaches as his main interest these days is in the field of “grass script” which Graham declares to be the most fluid and hardest to decipher of the principal calligraphic forms.

“Graham, instead of engaging in the discourse of camaraderie, prefers associating himself with various texts that seem to sustain him. Recently he has been speaking loudly certain poetic structures, when he thinks no one can overhear him. While moving past the shadow of the prow of The Samurai in Autumn, I recorded on a piece of canvas, that was nailed to the gunwales of the craft, the following of his private statements:

Frost covers Jingmen Mountain and the trees are bare; My boat is in full sail ahead carried by the autumn wind; I made this journey not just because of good fish to eat; But really to see the famous mountains of Zhejiang

“Graham and Nemorensis seem to have formed a working relationship. The condottiere has condoned this association yet I find it disturbing. Anyway, it is not for me to comment on the affairs of the human heart.

Restiff d’ Anjou, Scribe to the condottiere Yhren Ecrete”

The exhibition runs from June 21 to July 3. Hilary Graham will give a talk titled The Sinking of the Mendi as part of 'hottopic' on June 29 at 18h30.
