KEEP IT TO YOURSELF (article first published : 2005-06-20)

An installation titled Keep it to Yourself by Dineo Seshee Bopape opens in the Multimedia Room of the NSA Gallery on June 21 at 18h00.

Dineo Seshee Bopape recently completed her BTech Degree in Fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology and has participated in numerous exhibitions in the recent past. This includes participation in Tangencya, curated by Andries Botha and Miguel Petchkovsky, and Urban Edge for Redeye at the Durban City Hall.

Dineo Bopape presents an “installation of mystery and intrigue, a maze of obsessiveness”. She is interested in the collection of material and its potential to invoke strong emotional reactions. The resulting considered, abject messiness provides the viewer entry into the netherworld of the unsaid and unspoken. Secrets, white lies and elements of psychosexual ambivalence are components on the artist’s palette, stirred and applied with vigour to create a site for contemplation.

She states that her work “is a search through a minefield of metaphors in spaces...spaces of memory and of the present, spaces of the real and the imagined, the hidden and revealed. It is an attempt to conceal and mask, whilst simultaneously attempting to peel away the husk and layers that crust over secretive stories embedded in objects and in people.

”I am intrigued by the mundane secretive aspects of people's lives, 'un-important' rituals, the ecstasy and discomforts felt and experienced in seemingly 'private' and 'public' spaces- which is made real and embodied in the material world,” she says. “These objects (manipulated, bought, left over, found and gathered) act as carriers of information and experience ... this process of collecting and masking and embracing and spilling and rejecting and protecting is often obsessive and compulsive and the result is almost always like a discordant orchestra of 'stuff'.”

Keep it to Yourself runs at the NSA from June 21 to July 10.
