2005 NEW SIGNATURES COMPETITION (article first published : 2005-06-6)

Sasol today said its New Signatures Competition, which has evolved into one of the most progressive art competitions in South Africa, is currently underway.

The competition offers prize money of R60,000 and presents unique opportunities for emerging young artists to advance their careers and gain local and international recognition. It has also inspired many important and exciting works of art. This tradition is likely to continue this year.

Sponsored by Sasol for the past 15 years in partnership with the Association of Arts Pretoria, New Signatures is open to all emerging South African artists. Previous winners include Diane Victor, Kathryn Smith and Richard Penn, who are now established and reputable artists.

To ensure easy access to the competition for all entrants around the country, artists will be able to enter their works at six different nationwide venues and on the internet.

Artists, who are older than 18 years, are invited to submit one or two art works via the internet at www.sasolsignatures.co.za between June 1 and July 12. In KZN, works could be delivered to artSPACE durban, 3 Millar Road, Stamford Hill. (Phone 031 312 0793) on July 11 and 12.

The competitionís judges will review all artistic works and invite those artists who have met the grade to transport their works to the Pretoria Art Museum. These works will be displayed at the museumís Sasol New Signatures Exhibition from August 3 to September 15. The collection will also be displayed on the Internet for viewing by art enthusiasts and for purchasing by collectors. (www.sasolsignatures.co.za)

The winning entry will receive prize money of R50,000, while the runner-up will be awarded R10,000. Those artists who win merit awards will receive a copy of Sasolís recently published art book, Art @ Work, which features some 120 artists whose works are housed in the companyís art collection.

This competition has continually evolved to accommodate the needs and mediums of artists. Previous winners have become leaders in the South African creative field. The 2005 New Signatures Competition promises to be even bigger and better, with a record number of entries expected.

Entry forms can be obtained from the Association of Arts Pretoria, the collection points or the internet at www.sasolsignatures.co.za Enquiries to Nandi Hilliard at the Association of Arts Pretoria on 012 346 3100.
