EZEQUIEL MABOTE (article first published : 2005-05-20)

In his second one man show at the African Art Centre, Ezequiel Mabote presents a fascinating and exciting body of new work. Focusing on women and light, the colour reduction linocut prints have been created with a much lighter and colourful palette than has been seen in his previous works.

The mood of the works is cheerful and full of love titles such as Field of Rhythm, Beauty of Women; Angelica; Walking through the light and Giant love.

Born in 1979 in the Gaza Province, Mozambique, Ezequiel Mabote is a self-taught artist. He is skilled mainly in printmaking (colour reduction print) batik and textile printing but also enjoys painting, sculpture, and bookbinding.

He learned from observing the wood carvers as well as the textile workers and designers of Mozambique and consequently, his works display a good feel for effective fabric design. He was influenced by the late Samuel Natamgwe Mbingilo, a woodcut artist trained at the John Muafangejo Centre in Namibia.

He produces images that reflect his childhood memories - people at work, leisure, and prayer and illustrates traditional folk tales and family stories told to him by his grandparents.

In recent years, he has built up strong contacts in the United States and regularly takes his work there to exhibit and sell.
