SOCIAL CHANGE (article first published : 2005-05-9)

Running at the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mcunu Gallery is Social Change, a solo exhibition of paintings by S'celo Hlongwa.

S'celo Hlongwa was born in KwaMashu in 1978. Although he does not have a formal education in the arts, he has equipped himself with a number of skills, including painting, drawing, wirework, mosaics and silk screen printing.

This exhibition of paintings is focused on the social changes that have occurred in South African society since the move towards democracy and the impact the government has had on the lives of the ordinary man in street since 1994.

S'celo was inspired by his attendance of a workshop in Brazil that examined how art can assist in the betterment of people's lives and the psychological preparations that one must make to be ready for change.

The exhibition runs until June 5. More information on 031 332 0451.
