SAARTJIE BACK ON TRACK (article first published : 2005-03-27)

Due to popular demand and the sponsorship of art.coza, Saartjie - the ezine - has been rebirthed after a period of ‘en’forced silence.

Saartjie was started in 1998, and grew into an informative zine that, due to its non-commercial and independent status, played a significant role in opening alternative, yet significant, perspectives to art criticism and the exhibition circuit in South Africa.

Michael Matthews is a practicing artist and the editor of Saartjie. He often works on Saartjie in collaboration with other writers from different fields. The point of using Saartje Baartman as the editor’s voice gives the editor a point of departure that is at once that of an exploited historical black female, while retaining an ironically contemporary white male ‘sub’ voice.

Saartjie subscribers are mainly local curators and artists but there has been a growing international following over the years. Particularly, since the Saartjie web site was initialised later in same year at http://saarte-zine.s5.com

The point of the Saartjie zine is to push information to the passive subscriber who receives the zine on a regular basis without having to do anything.

“The Saartjie newsletter is not spam,” says Michael Matthews. ”If you would like information, essays or exhibition details to be included in the next Saartjie please email saartjie@art.co.za by the first of next month with your information and we will try our best to include it in the next issue. If you wish to subscribe please send an email to the same address.

“The views and ideas expressed by Saartjie are not necessary those expressed by art.coza and art.coza takes no responsibility for the actions of Saartjie.”
